Why is it worth visiting?

St. James’s Church is one of the most important sacred and art-historical buildings in Ljubljana. When it was built, it was the largest church in the city, and for centuries it served as a cultural, spiritual, and educational hub, shaping the lives of many influential figures of its time.

Today, the church continues to inspire visitors—not only through its beauty, but also through guided tours that invite deeper reflection and understanding of art, space, and spiritual heritage.

During your visit, you will discover:

  • The High Altar by Francesco Robba, a masterpiece of Baroque sculpture in Ljubljana, featuring monumental adoring angels and seventeen statues carved from Carrara marble.
  • The Baroque Altar of St. Joseph, with dynamic marble statues by Angelo de Putti and the painting The Death of St. Joseph by Franz Karl Remb.
  • The Altar of the Holy Cross, one of the oldest stone Baroque altars in the region of Carniola, known for its dramatic relief of the dead Christ by Matthias Hendrichx.
  • The unique Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, richly decorated with stucco, paintings from the saint’s life, and a marble altar crafted by Venetian sculptors—the Groppelli brothers, Jacopo Contieri, and Angelo de Putti.
  • The famous Goršič organ from 1883, one of the most important sacred instruments in Ljubljana, admired for its historical and musical value.

St. James’s Church is truly a cultural treasure of Ljubljana. Through our guided visits, we seek to share this heritage with both local and international visitors—not just as an artistic gem, but as a space of deep experience and spiritual encounter.
